And they’re off! Owners and trainers from eight countries nominated a bumper crop of 253 runners in the hopes of winning the 150th edition of the Melbourne Cup on Nov. 2.

12-time winner Bart Cummings nominated an even dozen, including the highly rated four-year-olds So You Think (Cox Plate winner), Faint Perfume (VRC Oaks winner), Dariana (Queensland Derby winner), and Rock Classic (Australian Guineas winner).

Gloria de Campeao Wins Dubai World Cup in Photo Finish

2010-Dubai-World-Cup-web High drama as Brazilian-bred Gloria de Campeao ushered in a new chapter in Thoroughbred racing by claiming the world’s richest race in a thrilling finish at Dubai’s new Meydan Racecourse.

The photo finish marks the first time in the brief history of the Dubai World Cup that the winner was not owned by either by a member of the Maktoum family or an American.

Saturday night was Gloria de Campeao’s third run at massive prize. A son of Impression, he ran eighth to Curlin in the 2008 Dubai World Cup and second to Well Armed in the 2009 Dubai World Cup but was not to be disappointed this time around and led from wire to wire.

Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin Racing capped off one of its finest North American campaigns by winning the Eclipse Award for Champion Owner at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel Monday night.

Led by Flashing, Seventh Street, and Music Note (pictured at left winning the Ballerina Stakes at Saratoga) Godolphin notched nine Gr. 1 victories, including its fourth Breeders’ Cup win when Vale of York edged Lookin at Lucky in the Juvenile Stakes at Santa Anita. “It is a brilliant result for everyone at Godolphin to win such a major award in the US,” said Godolphin trainer Saeed bin Suroor.

Godolphin: Overlooked and Under Appreciated

During my whirlwind tour of the Melbourne Cup Carnival and the Breeders’ Cup, one of the most surprising developments I witnessed was that the world’s winningest stables was almost completely written off by the pundits and the betting public.

On the first Tuesday in November at Flemington in the Melbourne Cup, Crime Scene with 2000 Cup winner Kerrin McEvoy up went off at 40-1. As we all know, McEvoy’s runner took the lead 3 furlongs out and finished a strong second to Shocking.

It’s taken more than five years to get the story of the 2002 Melbourne Cup into print form, an experience I encapsulate in these brief comments.

PRINT: “Heart-Stopper When Ollie Won the Cup”

Few, if any, sporting moments have captured the hearts of a country more comprehensively than Damien Oliver winning the 2002 Melbourne Cup on Irish stayer Media Puzzle.

A week after his brother Jason died after a barrier-trial accident, Oliver produced his greatest ride, one he would dedicate to his late brother.

It was a triumph of many kinds. For Irish genius Dermot Weld, it was his second Melbourne Cup in nine years.

For Media Puzzle, it was overcoming a broken pelvis that had threatened his existence, let alone an emerging career.
