Is Zenyatta Retired … Or Getting Ready to Race Again?

Zenyatta-web
Zenyatta took to the track on Wednesday for her third workout at Hollywood Park since her decisive victory in the Breeders’ Cup Classic and subsequent “retirement” by owners Jerry and Ann Moss. The 6-year-old worked a half-mile in 48 seconds.

Naturally, this level of activity coupled with her undisputed appeal has spurred talk of a return to racing for the great mare, but trainer John Shirreffs insists that is not the case.

“That decision is Mr. Moss’s and he hasn’t said anything other than what he said after the Breeders’ Cup,” Shirreffs says.

A lot of comments about my recent Huffington Post piece on the avalanche of media coverage at the Melbourne Cup Carnival versus the minimalist approach exercised by American newspapers at the Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Santa Anita.

This article by Tony Arrold ran in The Australian on Monday. Arrold, who is the newspaper’s Sydney racing writer, brings up several points, and he got me thinking:

Damien Oliver has raced all over the world – Europe, Asia, and even out of the way places such as Mauritius. Should Ollie give it a go in the States?

Cast Your Vote for Horse of the Year at The Times

This is fun. This is what horseracing is all about.

The racing writers at The Times have set up their own match race pitting Rachel Alexandra against Zenyatta for Horse of the Year. Both the filly and the mare have beaten the boys, and it’s up to us to decide who is the more deserving of the two.

Jay Schreiber makes the case for Rachel Alexandra. He cites three important wins on three different surfaces in three different states – the Preakness, the Haskell, and the Woodward. In almost any other year, this sweep would seal the deal for Horse of the Year honors.

Will the Filly Take on the Boys in the BC Classic?

That’s the question everyone in American racing is asking as the countdown to the Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Santa Anita next weekend continues and Zenyatta’s racing plans still remain a mystery.

With just over a week left before the richest two-day meet in Thoroughbred racing, unbeaten Zenyatta is cross-entered in both the Ladies’ Classic, which she won last year, and the Breeders’ Cup Classic, which would pit her against male rivals for the first time in her stellar career.

Despite 13 wins from 13 starts, the 3-year-old’s story has been overshadowed by rival runners such as Rachel Alexandra and the two birds, Mine That Bird and Summer Bird.
